Since 1984 the Cheshire Homes Society of British Colombia has provided a variety of programs to assist survivors of a brain injury to achieve their maximum level of independence. Successful graduates number in the hundreds. The homes offer a supportive environment that encourages feelings of self worth, a sense of belonging and an opportunity to contribute to the running of the house. The participation of family and friends is always encouraged. A high ratio of trained staff combined with low staff turnover provides a stable living condition for the residents. As individuals achieve their goals the opportunity to progress to a more independent setting is made available through the continuum of our services. Many of our graduates have obtained part-time employment, continued with their studies or have become volunteers. For those who have been unable to manage independently our long-term homes offer safe and secure support.

Reinvesting

The importance of vocational/occupational pursuits cannot be underestimated in successfully surviving an acquired brain injury. Throughout our history, Cheshire has engaged current residents and alumni in various capacities within our programs. ABI survivors assist us to mentor other survivors as volunteers and rehabilitation support workers, provide house maintenance and serve on our Board of Directors. We believe that providing opportunity for Cheshire alumni to reinvest on behalf of other ABI survivors is a valuable component in maintaining a vigorous organization that continually delivers great client service.
