Residential Care Worker Full Time

(Port Coquitlam)

We are hiring a Permanent Full-Time Residential Care Worker for our group home in Port Coquitlam.  Work in this small home like environment supporting 5 medically fragile clients.  Applicants must be a registered care aide with a class 4 drivers license.

Hours:

  • Position 1 Sunday - Thursday, 7 am - 3 pm
  • Position 2 Tueday - Saturday, 3 pm - 11 pm

Job Summary:

In consultation with the Program Manager and Director of Client Services, the key residential care worker provides nursing assistance, personal care, community leisure programs, companionship, housekeeping duties and support to individuals with a brain injury living in a group home, while providing a safe, natural, clean, home-like environment. Encourages the residents to be as independent as possible and to achieve an active, productive and rewarding lifestyle by working side by side with the residents; implementing positive, creative experiences to enhance resident quality of life. The key worker works with all the residents, with key responsibilities of one specific resident, writing monthly reports and contributing to the care plan of the resident.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Reads residents daily log books and team communication book, at the start of each shift and writes health/leisure progress notes in residents log books, by the end of each shift.
  2. Prepares, administers and documents medications, under the direction of the physician.
  3. Contacts emergency services immediately in life threatening situations such as major illness or injury and follows emergency team direction for action.
  4. Provides nursing assistant care such as observing skin for ulcers, wounds, infections, and skin problems, suppositories, taking and recording vital signs, application of dressings and topical medications including ointments and lotions as set up and outlined by the registered nurse.
  5. Telephone’s the family doctor’s office and makes medical appointments for one specific resident, under the direction of the registered nurse.
  6. Provides personal care such as bathing, dressing, oral hygiene, hair care, bladder and bowel care and other non-nursing care.
  7. Observes and monitors the residents and their environment each shift, and reports physical, cognitive or behavioural changes, to the manager.
  8. Positions/repositions by means of ceiling lift or two person repositioning for comfort, safety, body alignment, promotion of respiration and circulation.
  9. Follows the mealtime guidelines set up and outlined by the registered dietician nutritionist for oral/tube feeds by preparing, cooking, feeding, administering, noting changes in appetite and/or food preferences, and storage of food.
  10. Performs range of motion exercises as set up and outlined by the occupational therapist.
  11. Transfers by means of ceiling lift/mechanical lift in accordance with the occupational therapist’s guidelines.
  12. Identifies the recreational interests and abilities of one specific resident by means of being familiar with the residents history, personal habits, likes, dislikes.
  13. Encourages and motivates the residents through trust building, sharing and companionship.
  14. Participates in the residents leisure activities that include swim programs, parties, crafts, shopping, games, reading, computer time, pet interaction, walks and dancing to stimulate social interaction and physical activity.
  15. Provides assistance to one specific resident with the purchasing of personal care items that include deodorant, shampoo, and toothpaste.
  16. Keeps financial records on one specific resident for personal care items and writes required entries in petty cash ledger and provides receipts to the manager and/or family member.
  17. Writes entries in petty cash ledger for recreation monies and provides receipts to the manager.
  18. Arranges the transportation needs of one specific resident by telephoning Handi-Dart services, when required, and where applicable, and accompanies the resident to and from programs that include scheduled appointments.
  19. Operates the society van for community programs, ensuring a pre-trip safety inspection is made on the vehicle and reports maintenance concerns to the manager.
  20. Records and reports all van accident/incidents to the manager, which include injury and near injury, on and off site.
  21. Secures the residents in the van by means of safety/lap belts.
  22. Carries out safe driving responsibilities set up and outlined by law enforcement regulations.
  23. Maintains record of mileage by writing mileage in the van ledger after completion of each community program.
  24. Writes a brief monthly summary on health related issues and recreational involvement on one specific resident.
  25. Identifies and reports all potential safety hazards such as we floors, faulty equipment and ongoing maintenance concerns such as light bulb replacement, to the manager.
  26. Maintains household supply levels by checking and restocking supplies such as personal care, emergency, and housekeeping supplies and assists in taking inventory.
  27. Shops for groceries by means of going to the store, collecting and purchasing groceries.
  28. Provides assistance to one specific resident in the completion of personal laundry that includes collecting, labelling, laundering, drying, ironing and distributing the clothing items
  29. Completes general laundry that includes collecting and sorting soiled linen, washing, drying and folding sheets, towels, slings and distributes the items.
  30. Cleans and maintains one specific residents bedroom such as furniture, fixtures, closets, drawers by means of dusting, wiping, polishing, sorting
  31. Cleans and maintains kitchen/dining room area by means of washing, cleaning and storing dishes, cutlery, pots, wiping counter tops, table, sink, empties garbage can.
  32. Maintains all floors and carpets by sweeping, washing, vacuuming.
  33. Participates in weekly garbage/recycling maintenance by collecting and disposing of refuse and cleaning refuse area by means of sweeping and hosing area and cans.
  34. Maintains and clears sidewalks and driveway of debris by sweeping, including snow removal by shovelling.
  35. Contributes to the annual personal service plan for one specific resident and attends and participates at the meeting.
  36. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications :

  • high school diploma
  • current Long Term Care Aide certificate or equivalent such as, Home Support Worker, Community Care Worker.
  • current Emergency CPR A / First Aid certificate for community care facilities
  • class 4 drivers license
  • recent related experience working with the disabled population in a group home setting
  • recent related experience in behaviour modification techniques
